Sasu Kauppi

Sasu Kauppi is one of the rare designers of his generation of Finnish designers who focuses on a collection aimed mainly for men. Kauppi graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2011 and he was part of the MA show with his graduate collection, where sportswear was given a new spontaneous and raw form. Kauppi’s collection was granted the Dunhill award, which is usually given to a commendable menswear collection and portfolio of the final year. Kauppi also went on to get a lot of recognition from the British fashion press with his graduate collection and soon first orders for garments followed. Spring-summer 2012 is Kauppi’s first collection made for production and it is mainly based on easily recognized and approachable sportswear combined with hallmarks of more niched high end and artisanal collections like for instance stitchings that look hand-made. This contrast is even further highlighted through Kauppi’s use of bright, saturated colors, over-exaggerated proportions and playful details, all of which have come into being through meticulous work with material development and pattern cutting.
